What would it cost to wipe out world poverty, guarantee universal health care, stabilise population growth and roll back the ravages of global warming?
About $190 billion a year, or the equivalent of a third of U.S. annual military expenditure, a prominent environmental economist says in a new book.
"Once you accept that climate change, population growth, spreading water shortages, rising food prices etcetera are threats to our security, it changes your whole way of thinking about how you use public resources," Lester Brown told Reuters in an interview

Deep Screen – Voorstel voor Gemeentelijke Kunstaankopen 2008 presenteert hedendaagse kunstwerken die sporen van de digitale cultuur in zich dragen. De jury, onder voorzitterschap van gastcurator Andreas Broeckmann, selecteerde 18 kunstenaars uit meer dan 200 inzendingen.
Tijdens de tentoonstelling in Stedelijk Museum CS maakt directeur Gijs van Tuyl een keuze van werk dat wordt aangekocht voor de collectie van het museum.
De toenemende digitalisering van onze cultuur heeft gevolgen voor de kunsten. We maken snapshots met een mobieltje, kiezen met één blik op het scherm digitale foto’s en creëren onze eigen werkelijkheid met behulp van Photoshop en iPhoto.
