The exhibition project ISLANDS+GHETTOS by the Heidelberger Kunstverein will be on show from June 7th to August 31st 2008. Porc-Textabb30 works will be shown at the four different venues, all touching on phenomena connected to the theme suggested by the polemic title of the show: The social effects of urban expansion in the 21st century. Globally it can be observed that the the spatial fragmentation of cities is increasing, and that thus the social structure of these urban scenarios are drifting apart.

Two prototypcial case studies are central to the project ISLANDS+GHETTOS. Dubai and Caracas with their interchanging areas of poverty and wealth as typically seen in modern megacities are examplary for the tendencies of urban segregation. ISLANDS+GHETTOS aim to point out, that polarization, urban demarcations and partitions increasingly also is becoming relevant for European cities.

44 artists – see the complete list of artists below – have been invited to participate. Many have produced new works about the South-American metropolises or the cities around the Persian Gulf. Silke Wagner for example has dealt with the living and working conditions of the Pakistanian, Indian or Philipine guest works, building the artificial islands off the coast of Dubai, while living in segregated neighboorhoods of Sharjah. In the large format photographs of the Venezuelan artist Alexander Apostol shows how the almost utopian promises made by architects during the boom of the oil town Caracas have turned into closed off, windowless architecture, that seem to be imagine every foreigner to be an enemy.

On July 16th 2008 a panel discussion with lectures about the future of German cities will be held in Heidelberg with participation by Prof. Walter Siebel, Oldenburg, Prof. Jörn Düwel, Hamburg, Prof. Hans Stimmann, Berlin, and Prof. Gerhard Steinebach, Kaiserslautern. Roadtrip Nation is a movement that encourages young people to get out there and explore their options in life by talking with successful people who are passionate about their careers.
When did it happen?
The original roadtrip, as documented in "The Open Road," took place with Mike, Brian, and Nathan in the summer of 2001. It all started with four friends and one dilemma: "what do I want to do with my life?" Fresh out of college and unsure about the career paths in front of them, they were determined to expose themselves to more than just the traditional life roads. They hopped in an old RV, painted it green, and hit the road to talk with inspiring people from all walks of life to find out how they came to do what they love for a living.

Bicycles as Art - Hard Metal Design - Josh Hadar.art-bicycle-burningman They start as rough shapes in my mind and eventually evolve into fully developed concepts, much of the time without ever making it to the sketching stage. I envision the design of the bikes in their entirety and then go about deciphering building techniques that will bring the specific details to life. In essence, it’s creative problem solving and when a new technical solution works while enhancing the look of the piece, an overwhelming sensation of aesthetic balance and adrenaline is the result.

Project " FOOTPRINTS ALONG A COASTLINE "
WaddenSeaFestival, Denmark, August 2008

10 artists work along a part of the coastline in Denmark with materials provided by nature
Foundation Wadden Art organises in the Wadden Sea Festival Denmark 2008 the project Footprints along a coastline. Ten artists will walk and work along the Wadden Coast near marbaek Strand and Blaavand Lighthouse from 16 to 24 august. They work with the materials brought in by the tidal waters, with the water and the other elements. The selection is open for artists from all over the world. You will find detailed information in the site: www.waddenart.eu/footprints
Foundation WaddenArt realises a network of artists, involved with landart and installationart, and 'Footprints' is a project in which discussion and exchange on international level is an important issue. The website is updated recently and contents will be changing regularly. The site serves as a platform as well. A few entries are visible in the site, more are on their way, and the contents of the site open issues about artdevelopments, landart and ecology. If you like to contribute in these discussions, you are most welcome.
'Footprints' will exhibit its results in various locations in the Wadden as well as in various places in Europe.
Artist's entries will be visible in the website, give an impression and feed the discussion.
