S-O enrichment coordinator defines gifted students A part of my role as Enrichment Coordinator for the Sibley-Ocheyedan School District is to inform educators, parents and community members on the needs of advanced or gifted students. This first article will focus on a little background information on the gifted and a few definitions. High IQ is usually one of the first traits that the general public associates with gifted students. So, let's begin with the role of intelligence in identifying students with high ability. If an IQ test were administered to a very large sample of the population, around 68% of them would have an IQ score of between 85 and 110, another 13% would score between 70-85 and 13% would score in the range of 110-130. Around 3% would score above 150. Plotting the scores on a graph would result in a bell shaped curve, with the majority of people scoring in the middle of the curve. It is important to remember that this bell curve applies to a very large sample of people. It is also important to remember that most of us are going to be within the "average" range of intelligence. Average does NOT mean mediocre, it does not mean that an average student has no gifts or talents and it does not mean that a person with an average or below average IQ cannot be highly successful in life. Conversely, an extremely high IQ does not guarantee high achievement.
